Travel to Cuba has been made easier for US tourists.
The US Department of Transportation has lifted all restrictions on regular and charter flights to Cuba imposed by the Trump administration . However, we are talking only about American air carriers, Cuban ones, as expected, remained banned. At the same time, we recall that Russian tourists were forced to leave Cuba. The problem is not so much in the situation in Cuba itself, but in the airspace closed due to air sanctions – Russian carriers have no aircraft left for such long-range flights that would not fall under sanctions.
At the same time, the United States has not yet made changes to its travel rules that restrict travel to Cuba for tour operators' customers. Those. organized group travel, which was supposed to be allowed, remains banned.
However, for US tourists, an order from the Department of Transportation lifts all restrictions on flights to Cuba. Among them, a ban on regular flights to regional airports in Cuba – including resort ones, among them Camaguey, Cayo Coco, Cayo Largo del Sur, Cienfuegos, Holguin, Manzanillo Sierra Maestra, Santa Clara de Cuba, Santiago de Cuba and Varadero. The ban was introduced at the end of October 2019.
The decision took effect immediately, which means that from June 1, 2022, the US-Cuban market will again governed by the 2016 agreement. However, since the two countries do not have an open skies agreement, every US airline wishing to serve Cuba will have to apply for a route-specific permit.
