Tourists are fined in Italy for walking around the city in swimsuits

In the popular Italian city of Sorrento, a new important rule has appeared: it is forbidden to be on the streets in a bathing suit.

The mayor of the city, Massimo Coppola, issued an order last week forbidding people to appear in public places without outerwear. People who violate the new order face a fine of 25 to 500 euros.

“No more indecent behavior”, — literally wrote Coppola. “Sorrento is recognized worldwide as the capital of tourism and hospitality, and this behavior can cause discomfort to both Sorrento residents and tourists.”

Police will patrol the area to enforce the new norm

Sorrento, located on the famous Italian Amalfi Coast, is known for its stunning cliffs and sea views, as well as endless tourist opportunities. This attracts crowds of tourists, especially at the height of the summer season.

However, Sorrento — not the first popular tourist city to introduce a dress code. For example, in Barcelona and Mallorca, people can be fined for wearing swimsuits outside the beach or pool.

And in Italy, in the city of Praia a Mare, it is forbidden to walk around the city barefoot, while in Rapallo it is forbidden being on the street “semi-naked”.

The Amalfi Coast has become so popular that the authorities have been forced to introduce an alternative license plate system to control traffic. Depending on the sign, during rush hours, cars are allowed to drive between Vietri sul Mare and Positano every other day.

Well, in Sorrento, the rules are from 10:00 to 18:00 during August, and also on weekends days from June 15 to September 30, during Holy Week before Easter and from April 24 to May 2.
