International tourism in Italy reached the pre-crisis level of 2019

According to the document, Italy is among the European countries that today suffer minimal losses due to the current situation caused by the spread of new varieties of coronavirus and the crisis in Eastern Europe.

At the same time, tourism, like the entire Italian economy, has been hit the hardest by preventive measures, including travel bans and other restrictions imposed to contain COVID-19. Italy was one of the last European countries to lift all such restrictions.

In the past year, the Italian tourism sector has improved significantly, despite the fact that many problems remain. According to the Italian national statistics institute Istat, between January and August last year, there was an increase in the number of overnight stays by a total of 74.1 percent compared to the figures for 2021.

The majority of foreign tourists visiting Italy , were citizens of Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands and Denmark. It was the Europeans who provided 75 percent of all international arrivals.
