According to the English-language Portuguese edition of Portugal News, they provided 960,000 overnight stays to local accommodation facilities. This is less than it was in July and August, when the numbers exceeded one million, but in the first autumn month there was no such tourist flow in the history of the island.
It is interesting that not only the number of foreign tourists is growing in Madeira. In September, the number of overnight stays by local residents increased by 16.1 percent compared to the same month in 2021 — 205,900 Portuguese from the mainland visited Madeira during this month.
As for foreigners, about 754 400 of them visited Madeira in September.
According to the National Institute of Statistics, this June tourists spent more days in Madeira and the Azores than before the pandemic in 2019.
