You will be very surprised now, but the item that you see in the photo will be replaced by a smartphone and a story in the currently banned *100gram network.

I will say more – it was invented many centuries ago and for many centuries was successfully used by reindeer herders who were not trained in reading and writing, replacing diaries with them (or as it is now are called personal blogs with stories), chronicle and at the same time being a calendar.

Each such diary-calendar was compiled for one year and made of bone or wood. Bone diaries were more reliable and durable, but required much more effort and painstaking work. But most often, of course, these gadgets were made of wood, because. it does not require a lot of time and skills, and the aesthetic side did not matter to many.

Now I’ll tell you how we used this diary-calendar.

Each side of this bone plate is a half year.

Next, we see that there is a notch in the middle of each face, and notches on either side of it – 30 or 31 pieces. So each face is a month, and the notches on it are days. The result is 4 months. And two more months are incised by days on a ledge-ridge, leaving on both sides of the hole in the middle.

The diary-calendar looks exactly the same from the back.

The hole in the middle means the sun, and the calendar starts from it at the middle edge.

How do reindeer herders work with this diary and why do they even need it?

Here, near some notch-days, you can see different notch symbols. These are just those stories or blog posts where a person indicates important events that have occurred for him.

For example, the drawing of the sun over the 13th day of January is the end of the polar night and the first sun of the year. Crosses are Orthodox holidays: Christmas, New Year according to the old style, Epiphany in the same January. (and December will be on the central edge to the left of the hole-sun). There you can see the drawn essence around November 2. This means that ice fishing began on that day.

And this is what April looks like. In the beginning, a person noted successful fishing and harvesting of fish. Then there was Palm Sunday. Easter. At the very beginning of May, then, next month – deer calving… deer shed their antlers when a child is born or someone has gone to the land of eternal hunting. When winter and polar night began. In general, all the most important things for people in their not so diverse life.

Such plates were made, and still many are made every year. And when the diary ends, they don't throw it away, keeping it in the plague among other important things.

So that you can always remember when and what happened in the last year or earlier, for example, the course of fish or the rut of deer began. Well … this is some kind of chronicle of a family or a camp …
