A Wizz Air plane with a delegation on board landed the day before at the new terminal of Samarkand International Airport and was met by the management of Air Marakanda. Wizz Air — the second major carrier of the UAE, which launched a new route to Uzbek Samarkand in the fourth quarter of 2022.
Two new modern Airbus A321neo aircraft, which recently replenished the Wizz Air Abu Dhabi fleet, were delivered to the new route.
Flights from Abu Dhabi to Samarkand start at $48. At the same time, two flights a week will be operated until the end of 2022, and from January 1, 2023, Wizz Air will fly on this route three times a week.
The new airport, where Air Marakanda and state partner Uzbekistan Airports JCS has already invested $80 million, will serve the region's population of 3.9 million and become a major hub for international transit flights.
An independent study by marketing firm Lufthansa Consulting predicts an increase in annual passenger traffic from 480,000 to two million people.
