During the first national tourism conference, Istat — Italian Statistical Office — cited data that between January and August 2022, the number of overnight stays registered in Italian accommodation facilities increased by 74.7 percent compared to the same period in 2021.
However, according to industry leaders, in Italy since 2012 there is no clear definition at the state level which enterprises, activities and tourism professions are associated with tourism and the hospitality industry. Among the priority tasks, the conference participants named the urgent formation of a Strategic Plan for the Development of Tourism, including a list of tourism enterprises and professions that meets national standards, meets the realities of the market and is formed by the Ministry and the regions.
Meanwhile, a total of 10.5 million tourists visited Italian campsites and tourist regions in 2022, up 11 percent from the previous year. This is 73 million overnight stays, with 57 percent of them provided by foreign travelers.
Tourists from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Denmark accounted for 75% of all arrivals. On average, they rested in the country for one week. For comparison, last year this figure was slightly lower than — 6.8 nights.
Moreover, the European statistical office Eurostat reported that Italy and France received the highest number of tourist overnight stays in Europe. In total, 28.1 million places were available this year, spread over 597,000 tourist accommodations.
5.1 million overnight stays, or a third of all available, were registered in Italy and France, the largest share the weight.
